The name Poggiorota comes from a round plain hill rising in the surroundings of the agriturismo. The area is very interesting from an archaeological point of view: archaeologists recently found some tufa stones orientated towards the sun direction in the winter solstice and the North Pole.

Professor Adriano Gaspani, an expert in prehistioric astronomy of the Colombo University in Milan, after having carefully studied the site, confirmed that it is an observatory dating back to 4300 years ago. In the site there is also a basin telling us there was a symbolic link between water and sky and which was probably used during ceremonies. There is also what seems to be a primitive sestante.

The agriturismo was completely restored two years ago maintaining the typical features of the local buildings. Our guests can either rent a whole apartment or individual bedrooms with kitchen and dining room, outside garden with table and chairs. We offer also bike renting and horse excursions in a nearby riding centre.

The surrounding area is an ideal base for walking: very often you can find deers, rabbits, porcupines, foxes and owls. On the near River Fiora you can also see the otter, a very unusual and protected animal. It is an emotion to look at the sky at night without the light pollution of the cities: the Milky Way shines in all its beauty just like thousands of years ago, when prehistoric men thought of those places as magical and mystical.
